Charley Harper Inspired

I am so excited to be the new hostess of the Saturday Inspiration Challenge at SplitCoast Stampers.  I’d love to see links to your inspired creations, so I can check them out.

BirchbarkandbirdsMy first inspiration piece is a print by Charley Harper entitled Birch Bark & Birds.  Several weeks ago, CBS Sunday Morning (the one show I make a conscious effort to watch every week) did a segment on Charley Harper’s new book (Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life) which was a collaboration with Todd Oldham.  I completely "got" what Oldham saw in Harper’s amazing work (often described as minimal realism) and just couldn’t get enough of it.

I wanted to capture the same feel, colors and design as the art piece.  I started by choosing scraps of cardstock (mostly Bazzill Bling) and cutting varying width strips.  Next I began weaving the paper starting with the wider vertical strip and the long narrow blue horizontal strip.  Then I just kept adding pieces weaving them together.  I used Hermafix adhesive, so if a piece needed to go on top instead of under, I could just rub off the adhesive with my finger.

The bird is a DMD clear dollar stamp and the sentiment is a rub-on.

I hope you find inspiration too.

PS – I am so thrilled to be Paper Monkey’s Blog of the Week!
