Be the Star of Your Own Life

Today I'm sharing one of my favorite mixed media pieces, that unfortunately got lost in our recent flood (which is why I'm glad I always photograph my art).  This piece of art was inspired by my Grandma, who was all of the things in this sentiment … and who wanted me to be the same.

The background started as a failed attempt to stencil a butterfly using pink and red Color Burst on a vintage dictionary page (too much ink). I set the page aside and when I looked at it the next day, I decided to try a wonky circle stencil with some blue Color Burst … still didn't love it, so I set it aside again.

The next day, I traced the Dylusions Flossie stencil onto the paper with a black pen (I had to turn the text sideways to make her fit), but she didn't have enough contrast, so I used the reverse of the stencil and filled it in with clear embossing paste. I applied it thinly using a horizontal motion to get the cool striped effect.

When that dried, I rubbed-on Inka Gold Silver Paste, which gave the image more contrast with the inky background. I finished with a Unity Stamp Company I am Woman sentiment that reminded me of my Grandma.
