Ozark Strawberries

This week's challenge at the Cards Blog is to make a card featuring berries.  When I think of berries, I think of summer's with my Mom and her best friend in the "you pick" strawberry fields.  Actually, what I remember is picking the ripest strawberries and stuffing them into my mouth before I could be caught … as if the red juice on my chin wouldn't give me away.

I didn't have any strawberries in my stamp inventory (what can I say, I'm in Iowa, so I have corn and tomatoes), so I went searching for a vintage strawberry label … and I found it in Meaghan Courtney's flickr stream.  It made me smile, because it is from Missouri … the place of those long-ago strawberry fields … and it says, "The Land of a Million Smiles".  I printed the label twice cutting out a couple of the largest berries & the word strawberries and attaching them with foam tape for a bit of dimension.

The label coordinated perfectly with Basic Grey's Nook and Pantry papers (which also has some tiny strawberries in the design).  I also incorporated a punched row of flowers down the center for this week's Basic Grey Punch It challenge

I made the flower embellishment by gathering eyelet lace around a thick glue dot and adding a vintage glass button for the center.

  1. hahaha!! I have the same memory. It was 1 for the basket and 2 for my mouth.. 🙂
Mom would drag one of her sisters and me and a few of my cousins out to pick berries at least a couple times a year. I always ended up with a stomach ache, but couldn’t wait for the next trip!
Love the bright summery colors on your beautiful card!

  2. I see it is from Monett, Mo. There used to be an old ice plant there that made ice they would put in large compartments at each end of the rail cars the strawberries were shipped in. That was before the refrigerated cars with diesel motors were developed.–Love Dad
