Inspired Plate Painting

Since I had so much fun playing with my art last weekend, I thought I’d get messy again this morning.  Today’s SCS Inspiration Challenge are these fun dishes from Pier One.Ic93_decor_dinnerware_folly_pier1

I loved the colors, color blocking, and how you can almost see the brush strokes in the glaze.  I also wanted to incorporate a circle element.

I rummaged through my supplies and found some Ranger Acrylic Paint in Lettuce and Stream.  I initially tried to draw lines with the paint across an 8×11 sheet of paper, but didn’t like the effect.  When I went to throw away the page, I folded it in half.  For some reason I unfolded it and realized I liked the smashed effect of the paint.

I cut another sheet of 8×11 cardstock into fourths.  I drew my design using the two bottles of paint on the first sheet and then smashed a second sheet on top to pick up the paint.  I was able to smash on several more sheets before the paint dried.  This card uses my first smashed piece.

Ic93wm1I colored in a few areas with the paint.  Then I took a black Sharpie marker and colored in the black areas.  Since the white and black areas looked a bit dull compared to the shimmer in the paint, I colored over the black and white with a Sakura Shimmer Gel Pen.  I colored small areas and then used my finger to "smoosh" the ink into the paper to try to minimize lines.

I trimmed the finished piece to 3 3/4" x 5" and mounted it on stream & black cardstock.  Then I added various circles of Black, lettuce textured paper, and stream.  I used a black marker to ink up just one of the Happy Girls by ERA Graphics as my final touch.

It’s always a good Saturday when I can start it out in my studio with ink and paint on my fingers.  I hope you have time to play with your art this weekend.
