Almost a year ago, I participated in the Vintage Magazine Challenge at Contemporary Collage Magazine.
I assume enough time has passed that they aren’t going to publish my images, so I thought I would share them here. I had a lot of fun challenging myself with this project. You had to do five collages on approximately 6″x 8/14″ pieces of chipboard. There were 9 theme choices you could choose from (which I realize a year later I can’t remember what they were).
You could only use images found in the magazine, and the one I received was mostly black and white, so that added to the challenge for me. I had never heard of Homemaker magazine before this challenge.

It did however remind me of the magazines I would have read in my childhood.
I started with some of the colored images in the magazine like this Corn Flakes advertisement. Al of the black and white elements were collaged onto the main image. It was like creating my own little cartoon story.

For the next one, I used a diamond pucnh to capture lots of tiny images from the magazine. I punched some colored images, and then used markers from that same 70’s color palette to create the remainder of the colored diamonds. I really loved how this one turned out.

For the next one, I pulled together lots of words and phrases from the magazine to tell a story … the homemaking expectations for women in the 70’s.

For the next one, I went back to more of the colored images in the magazine with lots of detail cutting. I used text in this one to create a couple of sentences down the page, and then incorporated images to support the statements.

For the last one, it was back to pure black and white. I started with the cool drill press image on the right, which looks like the one my Grandad had in his machine shop. He would occasionally let us use it, which was very fun.
This was another one with lots of text to go with the images.

I may have to give another vintage magazine challenge a try in 2026 … or maybe I’ll just find my own vintage magazine and give it a go on my own.
