I had fun with this week's Wanderlust lesson on Collage with Marta Tapkowska (aka Meremi). First I rounded up vintage papers to create the background in my Art Journal. My favorite was adding some vintage library cards.
The next step was to add ephemera. I chose some Tim Holtz Butterflies and blooms. I didn't have any greenery ephemera or napkins, so I die cut the Simon Says Stamp Outlined Clustered Leaves. I really loved my piece at this point and wanted to stop … but for the purpose of learning, I continued through the lesson.
Next she had you outline the images with a Durwent Inktense pencil and water to add depth. With my Open leaves, I felt like I got more muddy than depth. I used a blue grey and then went back in with touches of purple.
The final step was to go back in with white paint (I chose buff paint instead given the shades of my vintage papers) and fill in the lighter spaces to provide more contrast with the outlines.
Finally I splattered with white and black acrylic inks and added some artsy sentiment stickers that made me smile.
At this point, I still wished I would have stopped at step 2 … but that is the point of the class … and of making art … to figure out what speaks to you. I am really loving the process (and want to make many more vintage paper collages).
