Lazy Saturday Drive Through the Corn Fields

My husband and I have a rare weekend off together with no plans.  He suggested we go for a drive in the country, so we decided to head north and check out the Edgewood Locker.  Because of the wet fall, there are still quite a few crops in the fields and lots of tractors on the roads, so there was lots of activity to see on the drive.

The place was hoppin' when we arrived.  Outside was a chalk board advertising a special on Brats.  The first meal I remember eating in Iowa was grilled Brats (aka Bratwurst), so for me, they have a special connection to this state.  We didn't need 48, but we did get some Sweet Onion, Pineapple, and of course Cranberry & Wild Rice for the holidays.

The store had all kinds of meats and cheeses, and they were very reasonably priced.  We ended up coming home with Ranch Cheese Curds, Smoked Pork Chops, an assortment of ham and beef sticks, and lots of other meats for the freezer.

Here's my dear husband carrying all of our wares (the freezer bags from Aldi's are perfect for keeping road trip foods cold).

All-in-all a very relaxing drive resulting in lots of fun new foods to try.

  1. Hi Stef,
It looks as though you and your husband had a great day out. I’m very curious though: what is a ‘Brat’ to you, because to a New Zealander, a brat is a very badly behaved child, and when I first saw your photo ‘Brat Sampler’ I thought it was a menu for children who usually won’t eat what they are given, and so it was something to especially tempt them. I’m guessing this is not the case though. Isn’t it interesting that although we speak the same language there are differences!
    Have a great day.
    Hugs, Anne.

  2. here’s a thought neither of us have had before: WE’RE *A LOT* ALIKE!!! 🙂
in this case, specifically to enjoy weekend mini-roadtrips with a “foodie” type slant! (we even keep a bag like that in the back of jeff’s car…you know…just IN CASE!) 😉
(ps: the edgewood ppl have made a serious marketing faux pas: they need a 12-brat sampler pack with one of each variety, they could charge $20+ for it, and they’d sell out on the first day!) (b/c NO MAN alive could resist…& no wife would be mean enough to say no to pure science in reasonable quantities!) (…just sayin…)
